What our data says about Food Vlogs hooks
Food is the most Tamil-dominant niche we measured, at roughly 81.7% Tamil — far above tech, finance or gaming — and it earns the highest first-day view counts of the four. It is also the only one of them whose dominant structure is the tutorial rather than the explainer. That combination makes the food hook a different instrument entirely: the viewer is not deciding whether to be informed, they are deciding whether to cook.
Food Vlogs figures from the Tanglish Ratio Study — 119 third-party Tamil channels across 20 niches, roughly 987,000 transcribed words, captured June 2026. Tamil and English do not sum to 100: hybrid speech is counted separately from both. Download the CSV.
Which language to open in
Because food runs so heavily in Tamil, English in a food hook stands out far more than it would elsewhere — and that is a tool, not a problem. The English words that survive naturally in Tamil food speech are the ones without a everyday Tamil equivalent, plus the borrowed measure words. Keep those and let everything else stay Tamil. A food hook that code-switches at the rate a finance hook does will read as a different, more distant register, and in a niche built on intimacy that distance is expensive.
What a normal first 72 hours looks like
Food starts high and keeps climbing: the median roughly doubles between the first day and the 48–72 hour window. That sustained curve is characteristic of recipe content, which keeps being discovered through search long after the upload spike has passed. The practical consequence is that judging a food video on day-one views is misleading — but it also means a weak hook costs you twice, once in the launch window and again in every search impression that follows.
| Video age | 25th pct | Median | 75th pct |
|---|---|---|---|
| First 24 hours | 3,810 | 11,529 | 25,007 |
| 24–48 hours | 6,353 | 17,350 | 48,610 |
| 48–72 hours | 8,554 | 20,437 | 59,407 |

Three food vlogs hooks that work, and why
1.இந்த சாம்பார்-ல ஒரு பொருள் சேர்த்தா, hotel taste அப்படியே வரும். அது என்னன்னு பாருங்க.
Withholds one specific ingredient rather than describing the dish. The gap is narrow, concrete and closable only by watching — the cleanest curiosity structure available in a tutorial niche.
2.Restaurant-ல ₹250. வீட்டுல ₹40-ல பண்ணலாம். Same taste.
Converts the recipe into a savings figure before any cooking is shown. Food carries the highest day-one medians of these four niches partly because this framing reaches viewers who were not searching for a recipe at all.
3.என் பாட்டி இத பண்ணும்போது ஒரு step-ஐ மட்டும் மாத்துவாங்க. அதான் difference.
Provenance plus a single withheld variation. In an 81.7% Tamil niche, inherited authority is the most credible claim a creator can open with, and it cannot be replicated by a channel working from a recipe site.
Opening on the finished plate
The instinct is to show the completed dish first, and for the thumbnail that is correct. For the spoken hook it wastes the strongest asset a tutorial has, which is the unresolved question of how. A finished plate answers the question the video exists to answer. Open on the decision point instead — the one ingredient, the one step, the one thing viewers have been doing wrong — and save the plate for the payoff.
Frequently asked questions
How much English should a Tamil food vlog hook use?
Very little. Food is the most Tamil-dominant niche in our corpus at roughly 81.7% Tamil against 17.2% English — the widest gap of the niches we break out. Keep the borrowed measure words and the few cooking terms with no everyday Tamil equivalent, and let the rest stay Tamil.
Should I show the finished dish in the first five seconds?
In the thumbnail, yes. In the spoken hook, no. Food is a tutorial-led niche, and the tutorial's value is the method — opening on the finished plate answers the question the video was made to answer. Open on the withheld step instead.
Do Tamil food videos keep gaining views after the first day?
Yes, more reliably than the other niches here. In our first-72-hours panel the food median roughly doubles between the first 24 hours and the 48–72 hour bucket, because recipe content keeps surfacing in search after the upload spike fades.
